Buying your first surfboard
Buying your first surfboard should be a fun process as this is the first step to truly devoting yourself to the awesome sport of surfing. There are a few simple processes that you can follow which will enable you to find the surfboard that suits you best while ensuring that you have the highest level of safety possible.
Your first surfboard doesn’t need to be overly pricy or professional looking. You should get a surfboard that wouldn’t break your bank if it gets damaged, as this is very likely to happen since part of learning how to surf includes wiping out. You also want to get a surfboard that gives you adequate floatation so that you can paddle out a little bit easier.
The type of fin on the surfboard is not as important as it takes a little bit of practice before you can start doing sharp turns or other amazing stunts. Learning to stay balanced is one of the most fundamental tasks in surfing and there is a good chance that by the time you are ready for turns and tricks, you would already be on your second or third board!
Many people seem to learn better with longer surfboards and you generally want to get one that is over 2.4 metres.
You can find cheap used surfboards in the local paper or online auction ads. In general, you don’t really want to spend over a hundred pounds for your first surfboard as it most likely is not going to be your last.
If you are really serious about your new hobby, visit a surf shop, that way you can have an idea of what the different types of boards feel like.
Once you have selected the surfboard that works best for you, it is time to head out to the beach and start the learning process. You will fall and might even get a few scrapes. As long as you are determined to learn, you will find out surfing is a sport that anyone can participate in. Happy surfing!
