Choosing surfing lessons: What to look for
So Mate...you wanna learn to surf and shred Aussie style, or like they do in South Africa and France? Don't be a "kook"....do it right, first things first.
Surf the Web
You can learn a lot about surfing, before you ever hit the water. The web is filled with surf sites and surfing info. Learning a bit about surfing and the lingo that goes along with it will give you a big head start on choosing surf lessons.
Check out http://www.talksurfing.co.uk/ for a leg up on your surf smarts.
Locate a Surf School
Now you need to find school. If you are in Iceland, the schools may be a bit hard to find! However, if you are on the Gold Coast there should be quite a few to choose from. LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION!
Check the local phone books, newspapers, or internet for the local schools. Give them a call and ask them a few key questions. How many instructors do you have? When and where do you teach? What are you rates? Do you have CPR and First Aid Training!
It is also important to find out about their equipment. As a beginner you are not going to be jumping on a short board right off the bat.
Most good surf schools cater to beginners....so they should have a good supply of long boards. Plan on being on a 3 metre or larger board to start. You gotta start somewhere, right?
Pick an Instructor
Not all instructors have the same style. It is important that you pick one that you can get on with. Remember...you are going to be spending hours in the water with this "Bloke" or "Sheila".
Might as well not make it like a trip to the dentist, right!?! Look for someone easy going, but also knowledgeable about the local conditions, and safety conscious as well. Don't be bashful to talk to a few to find one you are comfortable with.
Take the Plunge!
Use the information you have learned to choose your surf lessons. But most importantly, make a real commitment to Learning to Surf!
