Do it in the Sand: Beach Volleyball
Digging It In The Sand: Beach Volleyball
Sun. Sand. Fit, tanned girls in bikinis and men in shorts. Definitely southern California or Hawaii, right?
Surprise! It's England, where beach volleyball is quickly becoming one of the fastest-growing sports in the country. In the run-up to the 2012 London Olympics, Volleyball England, the London Beach Volleyball Club, Beach Volleyball UK Ltd, and other volleyball organisations are busily promoting the sport and encouraging people to get out and play.

Who's Got Game?
For anyone who's watched or played indoor volleyball, the move to the beach is going to come as a bit of a shock - it's a totally different game! Indoors is much more about offense and attack - it's a lot easier to jump off a hard floor than it is to jump out of the sand - while the beach game brings a lot more defence into play.
Sand is the great equaliser, and it's perfect for players who may be vertically challenged, but who are quick on their feet. In indoors, it's all about big hits, but on the beach, smart shots to the open court work just as well as a power spike.
At the Beach
One of the best things about beach volleyball is where you play it. Although England doesn't necessarily have ideal weather for the sport (the season runs only from about May to September), it does have lots of great beaches, and tournaments take place all round the coast. From Margate to Great Yarmouth to Brighton, on any given summer evening or weekend you can find players of all levels running, diving, and jumping in the sand.
In the City and Around
Luckily for those who don't live near the coast, there are other places to get that beach volleyball fix. In London, the LVBC run two courts, one at Shoreditch Park and the other at Mayesbrook Arena in Dagenham. BVUK has helped to build sand courts in The Grove, Herts, and an indoor sand court at Whitchurch, Bristol.
Dig It!!
Beach volleyball is the wave of the future, so put on that swimming costume and hit the beach!
