Waverunner Safety Tips
Waverunner Safety Tips
Whether you're in Ibiza or Phuket no beach holiday is complete without an hour or two on a rented Waverunner. Waverunners are fast, fun and deceptively easy to use. Travellers who underestimate these craft may wind up seriously injured, or worse.
Fortunately, safe Waverunner handling is as easy to learn and remember as driving an automobile.
The Basics
Above all, the Waverunner is a motor vehicle and should not be operated by anyone who has been drinking.
If alcohol is going to be a big part of your holiday, try to schedule your Waverunner rental as early in the day as you can manage.
Safety Gear
When you rent a Waverunner, you'll be given a life jacket and, likely, a helmet. You must wear these at all times, even when you operating in shallow water.
It won't matter how good a swimmer you are if you're knocked out. Your life jacket will help you stay afloat if you're injured or unconscious.
By the same token, a life jacket is not a substitute for the ability to swim. If you can't swim, the Waverunner is not for you.
Know Your Water Craft
Operating a Waverunner is relatively simple, there's a throttle, handlebars, and not much else. But don't let simplicity lull you to sleep. There's a lot of horsepower behind a Waverunner and a collision on an out of control Waverunner could be fatal.
Take time to learn the particulars of the Waverunner you're on before you hit the waves.
Right of Way
In all likelihood, your Waverunner will not be the only craft on the water. Learn the rules of right of way before you take to the water. In most part of the world, commercial vessels have the right of way over smaller watercraft.
And remember, when you're in the United States, travel on the right side of other watercraft.
Thinking of safety when you're on holiday is hard. The sun, the booze, and the beautiful people can be distracting. Let common sense guide you and you'll have a holiday to remember.
