Win Surf Lessons

You might be able to learn to surf with one of the country's top professional boarders.

The WMN has teamed up with the RNLI and sports brand Animal to offer children in the South West a very rare chance to meet and learn to surf with top UK professional surfer, Alan Stokes – and also design a surfboard.

Surfing is becoming more popular than ever in the South West, with more than 300,000 surfers regularly heading to the waves on the region's fantastic beaches.

The competition is being run to draw attention to the RNLI's latest campaign to raise funds to help save lives.

Animal has stepped in to help by calling in the services of their top surfer, Alan Stokes, who lives in Newquay, to help.

Alan is offering a rare chance to meet and teach six local children to learn to surf with him, as well as learning how to stay safe in the surf with the RNLI Lifeguards.

He said: "As a professional surfer I can appreciate the fun and also the dangers of surfing.

"The RNLI Lifeguards do a great job of keeping the South West a safe place to spend time on the beach and in the water and it's great to be able to contribute to their work."

The charity has produced a simple red surf leash string, which attaches the surfboard and the leg leash together, that can be bought for a small donation in many surf stores in the South West.

The leash string can be used on boards, as a wrist band, keyring, on clothing or any other way in which you wish to "show your support".

All you need to do to win one of the six places, which will be held at the Animal Surf Academy in Polzeath, is design a surfboard which illustrates one of the following surf safety messages:

Beginner surfers should only surf between the black and white flags

Never surf on your own

Always wear a surfboard leash.

With more and more people making the water their playground, RNLI lifeguards are serving an increasingly important role and the pressure on their charity funding has become even greater.

A number of RNLI lifeguards are surfers themselves and do the job through their love of the ocean, so it seemed right to ask surfers to help.
